Nature Framed

At Home in the Landscape

By Eva Hagberg

Those of us who live in today’s electronically-obsessed and globally networked landscape frequently find ourselves oversaturated by technology and the constant flow of information, not to mention natural disasters and environmental devastation.  Countering this seemingly inexorable wave of nurture and nature, those of us who can have begun to seek solace in buildings that make us feel closer to an idealization of nature. As the concept of “green living” continues to evolve, the placement, design, and construction of houses—rather than the materials used—have become the defining features that take this interrelationship to the next architectural level.

Nature Framed: At Home in the Landscape (The Monacelli Press; on-sale May 17, 2011; $50.00) presents 24 residential projects that frame a particular vision of nature for their owners, bringing them as close as possible to nature while still being indoors.  Author Eva Hagberg specifically centers on houses that articulate our torrid, complicated, evocative, wonderful, declining, ascending, and fraught relationship with both our lived experiences and an ever-changing idea of nature.

Included in the book are houses drawn from every region of the U.S., including Southern California, Arizona, Washington, Connecticut, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, to name a few.  The book highlights dynamic designs by today’s most energetic architectural firms: new buildings by well-known designers including Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, Brad Cloepfil, Roy McMakin, ARO, Tod Williams/Billie Tsien, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, as well as up-and-coming smaller firms.

A colorful, clear presentation of the best recent architecture to explore this particular idea, Nature Framed contains 200 full-color images and complete floor plans, and gives equal attention to interiors and exteriors.  By focusing on the best contemporary architecture across the country, the book gives the reader sensations of floating on the side of a mountain or replicates the magical feeling of being enclosed high in a tree’s canopy.

EVA HAGBERG is a design writer whose work has appeared in Architect, The Architect’s Newspaper, Architectural Record, Art+Auction, Interior Design, Metropolis, Wallpaper*, the New York Times, Surface, Wired, and elsewhere. She is also the author of Dark Nostalgia.
