MIDNIGHT MOVIE

A Novel

By Tobe Hooper

Creator of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

“Much like he did in the world of film, Tobe Hooper has brought a fascinating and twisted new vision to the world of horror fiction.”Rob Zombie

“Tobe Hooper is a Texas original and a great American filmmaker.   His novel MIDNIGHT MOVIE is just as insane as I knew it would be.  A violent, funny and novel premise (no pun intended).”John Landis

“Hooper demonstrates an undeniable talent, using established horror tropes with considerable skill and ingenuity.” Publishers Weekly

“Reminiscent of Max Brooks’ World War Z in both topic and writing style, this novel is a quirky, entertaining, and sometimes comical read. Fans of Hooper, horror movies, and the horror genre alike will enjoy this.” Library Journal

Tobe Hooper’s debut novel, MIDNIGHT MOVIE (Three Rivers Press, Paperback Original, July 12, 2011), is one of the most terrifying, graphic, and entertaining books to be released this year. Written by legendary horror director Hooper, the mastermind behind cult classics The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, this novel is one his fans are going to discuss for years to come.

Like Max Brooks’ World War Z and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abe Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, MIDNIGHT MOVIE is a strange and surprising mix of fact and fiction.  It tells the story of what happens when one of Hooper’s films causes a deadly, supernatural contagion to spread across America.

As the novel opens, Tobe is attending a festival screening of his creepy and “lost” film, Destiny Express, at the South by Southwest Festival in Texas, a film Tobe wrote and directed when he was 15 years old that hasn’t seen the light of day for more than 30 years.

Over the coming days, Tobe learns that terrifying, seemingly supernatural events are befalling all those who saw the movie that night. Soon, the audience members’ friends are affected, too. And their friends. And their friends. The effects grow exponentially, and before long, people are dying by the thousands. Suspecting that the solution to the movie’s strange power lies in his own past, Tobe begins a desperate quest to understand the film’s 30-year-old origins.

Like Hooper’s genre-defining1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, MIDNIGHT MOVIE will surely cause a stir. Hooper’s fans will especially love it as the book plays cleverly on numerous elements of the director’s real-life biography—including the car wreck that nearly killed him, and parallels to Hooper’s real lost film.

Don’t miss the Q&A with the real Tobe Hooper at the end of the novel!
