KEEPING TIME

A Novel

By Stacey McGlynn

What would you do if you had the chance to revisit the past? To find someone long gone, and start anew with them? Where would life take you, and what would you learn along the way? Stacey McGlynn’s effervescent debut novel KEEPING TIME (Crown Publishers; October 5, 2010) explores these questions and more as she details one woman’s eloquent and moving search for lost love and dignity, and along the way underlines our deepest need throughout all of life’s adventures: to be loved, no matter how long the journey.

Daisy Phillips is a seventy-seven-year-old widow from Liverpool who suddenly finds her quiet life interrupted.  While under pressure from her son and his wife to sell her lifelong home and move into senior apartments, she stumbles upon a long-forgotten treasure in her cellar: a special watch given to her in lieu of an engagement ring by her first fiancé,  Michael Baker, a Brooklyn soldier stationed in England during World War II. Overcome with guilt that such a valuable object had been stored away for so many years, curious about her former love, and itching for new experiences, Daisy throws caution to the wind and travels to the United States to search for Michael and restore the watch to its rightful owner.

Determined to track down Michael, Daisy settles in with her slightly wacky American cousins on Long Island, quickly becoming part of their family drama and easily enticing them into helping her with her quixotic quest to be reunited with the man upon whom she realizes she has quietly pinned all of her hopes and dreams for a second chance.

Inspired by a transatlantic visit from her own long-lost eighty-year-old cousin, Stacey McGlynn’s KEEPING TIME is a deeply moving and entertaining story about a feisty and charismatic heroine, the celebration of life, and the way love ultimately persists.
