Science vs. Spirituality

Deepak Chopra and Leonard Mlodinow

Harmony, on-sale October 4, 2011

In a landmark new book, renowned Caltech physicist Leonard Mlodinow and spiritual leader Deepak Chopra face off in a passionate but respectful debate. WAR OF THE WORLDVIEWS: Science vs. Spirituality (Harmony Books, 10/4/2011) addresses some of the most fundamental questions that have intrigued humanity for hundreds of years, including how the universe began, where life comes from, and whether or not Darwinism fully explains evolution. What brings these two renowned thinkers together is an all-consuming passion for knowledge that overrides any skepticism over the other’s beliefs. “Each of us believes deeply in the worldview he represents,” they write in the preface. “We have written fiercely but respectfully to define the truth as we see it.”

So which worldview is right? Does science accurately describe our universe, or do the world’s wisdom traditions unravel mysteries that are beyond the scientific method? To find out, this book explores the clash of worldviews on four levels–the cosmos, life, the human brain, and God.

The two authors argue about where the universe came from, its nature, and where it is going. They debate evolution, genetics, and the origin of life. In the section devoted to the mind and brain, they address where consciousness comes from and the mind-body connection. Finally, they explore the ultimate mystery, God.

The joined forces of Chopra and Mlodinow reflect a growing interest by scientists in questions about the nature of reality, specifically in cutting edge research from cosmology and neuroscience. This need to answer ultimate questions is bringing science and spirituality together in unexpected ways and makes the debate in War of the Worldviews all the more essential.

At a time when the controversies swirling around science and religion often descends into slashing and bashing, it’s important to prove that people can change the course of their lives through real insight. War of the Worldviews: Science vs. Spirituality will not only expand the discussion in new directions but is a primer for anyone who wants to understand what the struggle for the future is all about.

Deepak Chopra is the author of more than sixty books that have been translated into more than eighty languages and include numerous New York Times bestsellers. Dr. Chopra is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, Adjunct Professor at Kellogg School of Management, and Senior Scientist with The Gallup Organization. TIME magazine has described Deepak Chopra as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century and credits him as “the poet-prophet of alternative medicine.”

Leonard Mlodinow received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of California at Berkeley and currently teaches at Caltech. His books include Feynman’s Rainbow, Euclid’s Window, and The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives, which was a New York Times Bestseller, Editor’s Choice, and 2008 Notable Book of the Year. Mlodinow is the writing collaborator of Stephen Hawking and co-author of the recently published The Grand Design, a book that argues that invoking God is not necessary to explain the origins of the universe.
