Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime

By Bill Gates Sr.

FOREWORD BY BILL GATES

“Bill Senior is as wise as his son is brilliant.  I’ve learned a lot from both of them and believe everyone can benefit from the insights Bill Senior shares in this book.”  —Warren Buffett

“Bill Gates Sr. is a wonderful example of what it means to be a global citizen, teaching us how we can work together for a more just and fair society.” —former president Jimmy Carter

“Bill Gates Sr. does more than just show up in this charming and instructive guide to a good life.  He shares his lessons learned as a husband, a father, a lawyer, a philanthropist, and a citizen.  Showing up for life is a gift of great value.” Tom Brokaw

“Dad, the next time somebody asks you if you’re the real Bill Gates, I hope you say, “Yes.” I hope you tell them that you’re all the things the other one strives to be.” Bill Gates

You would be hard-pressed to find someone today who is not familiar with Bill Gates.  Much has been written about his role at Microsoft and the work he shares with his wife at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  How did Bill Gates become the person he did, willing to leave Harvard to create a start-up software company when home computers were in their infancy? What were the values and influences that shaped his upbringing? And why is it that when he and Melinda Gates decided to start a foundation they turned to his father as the one person they trusted to run it?

In what originally started out as a private memoir meant to be shared with his children and grandchildren, Bill Gates Senior— lawyer, activist, husband, father, philanthropist—brings us his remarkable story with SHOWING UP FOR LIFE: Thoughts On The Gifts of a Lifetime (Broadway Books; May 11, 2010; Trade Paperback $13.99).  Now available in paperback with a new chapter, SHOWING UP FOR LIFE is an engaging, profound and deeply moving account of the values, principles and lessons that have shaped his own life, and which he and his wife Mary instilled in their three children.

Through a series of vignettes and stories – growing up in Western Washington in the years of the Great Depression, going to school on the G.I. Bill, building a family life and raising three high achieving children, establishing a career in the law, and meeting the remarkable people he would learn from in his own journey as foundation co-chair, Bill Senior offers a revealing look at a life well-lived.

The lessons and themes he has written about have broad appeal for anyone who wants to learn from and about a remarkable man who continues to have a dramatic impact on business, philanthropy and human rights around the world.

Featuring never before told stories and insights, Bill Gates, Sr. gives us a window into his family’s life and demonstrates through example how important it us to “show up” for your family, your local community, and the global neighborhood.

As Bill Gates Sr. puts it: I’m 83 years old. Representing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and everyone who is a part of it has given me the opportunity to see more of the world and its rich possibilities than most people ever do. I never imagined that I’d be working this late in life, or enjoying it so much.

SHOWING UP FOR LIFE translates one man’s experiences over fourscore years of living into an inspiring road map for readers everywhere.
