You may wave from the driveway or chat in the grocery store, but how well do you really know your neighbors? From casual picnics to carpools is it ever possible to know what’s actually happening behind closed doors? Debra Ginsberg, author of the highly acclaimed The Grift  (a New York Times Notable Book), tackles these questions with sophisticated intrigue and exposes the mystery lurking behind the neighbors’ picket fences in her new novel, THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING (Crown; November 16, 2010).

Aside from their annual block party, the residents of Fuller Court tend to keep to themselves—but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t all watching and judging each other on the sly.  From the provocative former reality-TV contestant to the prim and proper couple who take the “neighborhood watch” a little too literally, this San Diego street is full of tensions bubbling beneath the glossy surface of suburbia.  One of the residents, Joe Montana, is a handsome restaurant manager with a beautiful wife, Allison, and a seemingly perfect life, until
                                                                               -more-
one day the daughter he failed to mention shows up on his doorstep—pregnant.  Diana’s bombshell arrival in their quiet cul-de-sac sets off a chain reaction of secrets and lies that threaten to engulf the neighborhood along with the approaching wildfires fanned by the Santa Ana winds.  After the neighbors are forced to evacuate, they return to find their neighborhood severely altered by the aftermath—Diana is missing, leaving behind her newborn baby and many unanswered questions.

The story’s setting was inspired by a natural disaster and one of the characters was loosely drawn from a housewife in Ginsberg’s neighborhood, a respectable woman with a wealthy husband and three grown kids who pulls into her driveway one day and is arrested.  It turns out she was a fugitive on the lam for several decades after breaking out of prison where she was serving time following a drug bust.  This local story set the stage for THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING, which unfolds in the same clever and captivating manner as The Grift.  Fans of Desperate Housewives will be seduced by Ginsberg’s uncanny ability to invade the minds of her characters while simultaneously spinning a fascinating web of deception and mystery.

A potent blend of domestic drama and suspense, THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING reveals the secrets that bloom alongside manicured flowerbeds—and the truths that lurk behind closed doors.
