“Donald’s contribution to the history of the Packers has been extraordinary, exceeded only by his personal story.”
—Bart Starr, Packers quarterback, 1956–1971, and head coach, 1975–1983
“A great teammate . . . That he could go from a seventh-round draft choice to the Packers’ all-time leading receiver is a real tribute to him.”
—Brett Favre, Packers quarterback, 1992–2007
A seventh-round draft pick in 1999, Donald Driver was given little chance of making the Green Bay Packers roster, much less of becoming a 1,000-yard receiver, a beloved icon for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, and a Super Bowl champion. But in a life of adversity, Driver has overcome obstacle after obstacle and became one of the most popular players in the NFL, where in 2012, he was named one of the top 10 most liked players in the league according to Forbes and Nielsen E-Score.
Now in his memoir, DRIVEN (Crown Archetype, on sale October 22, 2013), Driver shares the inspiring story of his rise from living in a U-Haul trailer as a child to becoming a Super Bowl champion. Driver recounts his early years bouncing from city to city with his family while his mom, their only consistent caretaker, struggled to make ends meet. He also candidly discusses his troubled teenage years when his family settled in Houston’s Fifth Ward where he began to steal cars and deal drugs in order to fit in with his surroundings.
Driver overcame incredible odds and became one of the most beloved and successful players in the NFL. Now retired, he has a lot to be proud of as one of the most consistently great receivers in the game, with 10,000 receiving yards, seven 1,000-yard seasons, four Pro Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl ring to his name.
In his memoir, Driver takes you inside the locker room with legends such as Brett Favre and on the field where he played fourteen seasons, including his 2010 Super Bowl winning season, where he became the veteran leader for stars like Aaron Rodgers and others on what was one of the youngest teams in the NFL. And while he’s known for his moves on the football field, Driver is also known for his dance moves that were showcased on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, where he trained relentlessly on his way to winning the mirror ball trophy. Driver takes a look behind the scenes of that popular show and explains why he almost didn’t participate in the competition.
DRIVEN proves that no matter what life throws your way, if you have the drive to succeed, anything is possible. As Driver says, “If you get nothing else out of reading my story, you will come to understand that no matter what your background, no matter what your family life is like, and no matter what obstacles are thrown your way, if you have someone who loves you and looks out for you and if you have a mind to succeed, then anything is possible.”
