Praise for Jax Miller and FREEDOM’S CHILD:
“Original, compelling, and seriously recommended.”—Lee Child, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series
“Everybody in Painter, Ore. knows Freedom Oliver, who makes a jaw-dropping entrance in Jax Miller’s first novel Freedom’s Child…there’s a reckless power to Miller’s untamed prose…she can toss off a bruising one-liner…or offer a vivid description of Freedom’s brain when she’s off her meds… And sometimes she’s just plan amazing.” —New York Times Book Review
“A powerful read from an impressive new voice…Visceral and brazen, Jax Miller’s debut is an engrossingly raw exposé of one woman’s reparation, knotted with storylines from the dirty underbelly of biker bars, Native American legends, religious cults and one shocking plot twist you’ll never see coming…You’ll read nothing like it!” —BookPage
“Hits like a beer bottle to the head.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review
“Miller creates an intriguingly flawed heroine in Freedom . . . thrilling.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Cadenced prose salted with descriptive magic.”—Booklist
“For fans of fast-paced reads, reckless characters, and noir, this thriller will be a hit.”—Library Journal
“Seldom has a literary creation bounced off the page with as much raw vitality as Freedom Oliver…one of the standout debuts of the year.”—The Guardian
“An unsettling, jarring thriller that’ll have you tearing through chapters at page-ripping speed.”—TheShortlist
“…a compelling story cracking with energy.”—Charlotte Observer
“…a powerful tale with unforgettable characters.”—Bookreporter.com
“A terrific read from a powerful new voice.”—Karin Slaughter, New York Times Bestselling author of Cop Town
“Freedom’s Child is a remarkable novel that is as emotionally gripping as it is pulse pounding. Equally heartbreaking and hard-boiled, Jax Miller has delivered a sensational debut.”—Ivy Pochoda, author of Visitation Street
“Miller has created a daring protagonist that is nothing as she first appears and everything you want her to be: brash, passionate, strong, vibrant, and memorable. . . . a page-turning tale of redemption.”—Elizabeth L. Silver, author of The Execution of Noa P. Singleton
“A terrific modern noir. Think of a tough-as-nails, tattooed Mildred Pierce trying to do right in today’s corrupt and twisted world. It features a wild and terrifying cast of characters, including the roughest bunch of miscreants since Ma Barker propagated.”—Ace Atkins, New York Times bestselling author of The Redeemers and Robert B. Parker’s Kickback
“Freedom’s Child is wildly imaginative, wholly unique, and utterly unapologetic.”—Attica Locke, Edgar-nominated author of Black Water Rising and Pleasantville
“My name is Freedom Oliver and I killed my daughter.” So begins Jax Miller’s emotionally gripping first novel, FREEDOM’S CHILD (June 2, 2015; Crown).A propulsive, slap-you-in-the-face debut that grabs you by the scruff of the neck and doesn’t let go, this book is angry, funny, crass, and heartfelt. FREEDOM’S CHILD is a vibrant suspense story that is propelled by a memorable voice and raw edginess that sets it apart from other thrillers. Fans of the nonstop action of Lee Child, the character-driven mysteries of Tana French, and the gutsy attitude of Sons of Anarchy will be drawn to this amazing new voice. Freedom Oliver has a drinking problem. And quite a few other problems as well. She lives in a small town in Oregon, works at a bar, sleeps around while flirting with the town cop, and puts her daily antipsychotic medication aside in her “suicide jar,” which she intends to use as soon as possible. Despite her name, Freedom feels trapped: she’s in Witness Protection and has been for eighteen years. Twenty years ago, she was pregnant and wrongfully jailed for killing her husband. After putting her young son and newborn daughter up for adoption, she cooperated with the authorities, turned in her psychotic brother-in-law, and moved to Oregon under an assumed name. The one thing that has sustained her all these years is watching her kids grow up through updates on Facebook. Mason is an ambitious young attorney, about to make partner at his firm; Rebecca still lives in Kentucky with the minister and his wife who adopted her. But Freedom’s life is violently upended when she learns that her dangerous brother-in-law is being released and that her daughter has gone missing, possibly kidnapped. Without a second thought Freedom hops on a motorcycle, leaving Oregon and the safety of Witness Protection behind, to save her daughter and finally find a sense of peace after half a lifetime of regrets.
At twenty-nine, Jax Miller is a fearless writer whose voice comes, in part, from the many demons she fought growing up. Raised in New York and now living in the Irish countryside, she battled drug abuse for more than a decade, became a heroin addict, and for a time was homeless. Ultimately, she landed in rehab, where writing became her salvation after a counselor suggested she write as an outlet for her emotions. Her riveting debut quite literally saved her life. Of the experience Jax says, “There are only two things in life that keep my demons at bay. Praying and writing. I do a lot of both.”
Written with a blistering wit and infectious energy, and featuring an intricate plot and a one-of-a-kind protagonist, FREEDOM’S CHILD will stick with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: JAX MILLER was born and raised in New York and currently lives in Ireland.
