Jim Gaffigan, Popular Touring Comedian and Father of Five,
to Write Book of Observations on Family Life
for Spring 2013 Publication by Crown Archetype

Jim Gaffigan, a writer, actor, and popular stand-up comedian known for his keen observational humor, has reached agreement with Crown Archetype, an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group at Random House, Inc., to write his first book.

Titled, Dad is Fat, Gaffigan’s debut effort will be a collection of fresh and hilarious observations on family life, written from his perspective as an unlikely father of five.  The book is scheduled for publication on May 7, 2013, and will be released simultaneously in the United States  and Canada in print and digital formats. Part of the promotional campaign for the book will include autographed bookplates, autographed excerpt booklets, and thank-you notes.

Gaffigan, himself  the youngest of  six children, never imagined he’d have his own kids, especially with his nocturnal career choice. But all that changed when he met and married his wife, Jeannie, who, he says, “is someone who gets pregnant looking at babies.”

Expanding upon his hugely popular Twitter feed sharing the mistakes and victories of his life as a father that have earned him over one million followers, Gaffigan will reveal in Dad is Fat all the joys and horrors of contemporary life with five children. In sharing the lessons he has learned during his own parenting journey, Gaffigan will offer his take on everything from cousins (“celebrities for little kids”) to toddlers’ communication skills (“they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news”), to the eating habits of four year olds (“there is no difference between a four year old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor”).

Said Gaffigan, “I’m not sure if it’s a memoir, a confession, an apology, or a cry for help, but I’m excited to write about things I just touch on in my stand-up act.”

Mauro DiPreta, Vice President, Editor in Chief, Crown Archetype, acquired world, audio, electronic book, and first-serial rights from Creative Artists Agency. Suzanne O’Neill, Senior Editor, Crown Archetype, will edit the book.

In addition to his extensive stand-up schedule and his three Comedy Central specials, Gaffigan   starred for three seasons on the TBS sitcom My Boys, and has appeared in more than fifteen feature films and on TV series ranging from Sex and the City to That `70s Show to Flight of the Conchords. In 2011 Gaffigan starred on Broadway in the acclaimed revival of That Championship Season, alongside Kiefer Sutherland, Chris Noth, and Jason Patric.  He has also appeared in numerous award-winning commercial campaigns, including those for Sierra Mist, ESPN, Saturn, and Rolling Rock.

Said DiPreta, “We are thrilled to be publishing one of the most talented and beloved comedians on the stand-up circuit today. Whether you’re a parent or not, everyone will recognize their own families in Jim’s sharp and hilariously funny takes on home and family life.”

The parent company is Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA.
