Celebrating the Special Bond Between Families and Their Pets

AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS

By Mike Bender and Doug Chernack

Early Praise for AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS:
“The folks who brought the Internet the face-palming absurdity that is Awkward Family Photos have struck comedy gold again with Awkward Family Pet Photos.” —AOL

“Hilariously awkward.” —MSNBC.com

“The genius minds behind the hilarious site Awkward Family Photos—which features cringe-worthy, embarrassing photos of fairly creepy, fashion-challenged families—have taken their collection of awkward photos to a whole new level with their hysterical new site, Awkward Family Pet Photos.”

AnimalPlanet.com

Praise for AWKWARD FAMILY PHOTOS:

“This is the best book of embarrassing and strange photos of people who look like my family that I have ever seen.” —Judd Apatow, director of The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up

“Anything that both makes me laugh and think my family isn’t so embarrassing deserves to be a book.”

Joel Stein, Time magazine columnist

“This isn’t just a book; it’s a public service on the page, a living, breathing, laugh-out-loud reminder that no matter how badly you dressed, how oddly you posed, and how weird Uncle Dave who lived in the basement was, somebody out there had it worse. Particularly the girl on page 77.”

—Jennifer Weiner, New York Times bestselling author

Awkward Family Photos is absolutely hysterical, yet at the same time, it’s a stunningly accurate photographic record of the late-twentieth-century American family. Now I can be certain I was not alone in my awkwardness.”
Adam Herz, producer and screenwriter of American Pie and American Pie 2

Awkward Family Photos spent sixteen weeks on the New York Times list. It was featured everywhere from the Today show and Nightline to People and Maxim, and launched a line of greeting cards, calendars, and even a board game. Now, authors Mike Bender and Doug Chernack are back with even more awkward moments in their new book AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS (Three Rivers Press Paperback Original; November 1, 2011), a hilarious tribute to the unbreakable bond between people and their pets. There are few things more rewarding than having a pet. They love us unconditionally, shower us with attention, and actually help us live longer. So, what can possibly be awkward about our animal BFFs? Well . . . nothing. In truth, we’re the awkward ones. We adore our pets and treat them like members of the family, but let’s face it—sometimes L-O-V-E makes us go a little overboard. We give them middle names, throw them elaborate birthday parties, and make them a Christmas sweater to match with the rest of the family. Truth is, what they cherish most is our companionship. But maybe that’s why we love them so much—because for such a simple pleasure, they allow us to be as awkward as want.

It’s no secret that the mega-popular website AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com continues to be a hit. The site, which launched in May 2009, gets more than 15 million impressions per month, has 1.5 million unique visitors per month, and receives between 100 and 150 photo submissions every day.  Pet photos quickly became the most popular and the most commented upon photos on the site, so in June 2010 Bender and Chernack created AwkwardFamilyPetPhotos.com. Along with many never-before-seen photos, essays, and graphics, AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS features outrageous pet photos from the site, including dogs, cats, birds, rats, horses, pigs, goats, and exotic pets such as reptiles, sugar gliders, ferrets, and monkeys. AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS is sure to shock and delight anyone who has ever shared that uniquely special relationship with a family pet.
