Tuesday, July 6th, 2010Gillian Flynn on Writing Her First Novel Sharp Objects
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010Libraries are filled with stories on generations of brutal men, trapped in a cycle of aggression. I wanted to write about the violence of women. Female violence is a specific brand of ferocity. It’s invasive. A girlfight is all teeth and hair, spit and nails — a much more fearsome thing to watch than two dudes clobbering each other. And the mental violence is positively gory. Women entwine. Innuendo, backspin, false encouragement, punishing withdrawal, sexual jealousy, garden-variety jealousy — watching women go to work on each other is a horrific bit of pageantry that can stretch on for years.

This month, we’re kicking off a new Read It Forward feature. In every issue, we’ll ask you to respond to a question about book groups, and one lucky winner will win advance reader’s copies for your entire group: you’ll get to read a great new book before it hits the shelves and may be featured in an upcoming issue of Read It Forward.
Water, Stone, Heart by Will North
Thursday, April 1st, 2010“You all right down there?”
Andrew Stratton looked up toward the cliff top, ten feet above his head, but the afternoon sun was in his eyes and all he could make out was the silhouette of a woman’s head and shoulders, etched against a Wedgwood-blue sky. Stratton was standing on a narrow grassy ledge above the sea, which he shared with a loudly bleating, black-faced sheep. The shape of a dog appeared beside the woman. The shape barked.
Press Release: The California Roll by John Vorhaus
Friday, February 12th, 2010You’ve heard of a Ponzi scheme, but do you know the ins and outs of a Merlin Game, the Pigeon Drop, the Doolally Snadoodle, the Penny Skim, or the Dead Man’s Switch? World-class con artist and polymath extraordinaire Radar Hoverlander makes his living “on the snuke,” with his gift for bafflegab and an endless supply of assumed identities, the tools of a centuries-old trade. He’s very smart. And he’s very smooth. But how will he react when the snuke’s on him? As timeless as a perpetual-motion machine, and as timely as a Madoff arraignment, THE CALIFORNIA ROLL brings you deep inside the world of con artistry, where every fact is fiction and the second liar never has a chance.
