CROCHET LACE INNOVATIONS

20 Dazzling Designs in Broomstick, Hairpin, Tunisian, and Exploded Lace

By Doris Chan

Dolce and Gabbana.  Chanel.  Valentino.  These designers reign supreme within the tents of New York’s Fashion Week, displaying the hottest trends on the most glorious clothes.  One trend they all showed on the runway this season is crocheted lace, popularizing the boudoir style in a flattering and truly sexy way. Like these fashion titans, crochet expert Doris Chan has also fallen under the elegant spell of crocheted lace, which led her to write CROCHET LACE INNOVATIONS: 20 Dazzling Designs in Broomstick, Hairpin, Tunisian, and Exploded Lace (Potter Craft, April 13, 2010).  Doris took many traditional crochet techniques and modernized them, so her use of Broomstick, Hairpin, and Tunisian lace in her designs is unlike like anything seen before in the crochet world.

In the introduction, Doris writes:  “There are many benefits to incorporating lace into your crocheted wearables.  Open, lacy stitches help keep your crochet lightweight and airy.  And beautiful lace will invariably catch the eye of the beholder and hold center stage, keeping the attention away from the places where you’d rather not have attention paid.”

With 20 stylish fashions, Doris proves that this is not your grandmother’s lace. Each chapter begins with an introduction and detailed tutorial followed by a progression of projects for practice, all doable by crocheters with basic skills.  Some of the projects include:

  • Soolin Belt – using a long strip of Broomstick lace, you can create a chic belt to fashionably accessorize an outfit (page 19)
  • Kylara Vest – a fitted sleeveless vest is trimmed in Hairpin lace (page 44)
  • Scarfaroo – one part scarf, other part pouchy bag, Doris takes Tunisian lace and creates a scarf with pockets (page 61)
  • Bozena Dress – a synthesis of traditional lace crochet stitches with accent beading, this dress works for every body type by adhering to a woman’s curves (page 96)

For many crocheters, it’s all about the options, and Doris demystifies creating a custom garment.  With a versatile jacket and skirt template that readers will be using throughout the book, Doris demonstrates how these can be adapted in a variety of ways to fit any style and any size, from XS to 3XL. More than just a book, CROCHET LACE INNOVATIONS is a master class on flattering and form-conscious garment design.
